IMO you are both half-wrong and half-right.
Cats can and DO hold grudges... but may or may not act out on it.

You hear stories of cats ****ing in owners beds... it DOES happen...
Anyone who has spent any time around cats and paid attention to them
will know they can hold grudges - or the opposite of a grudge as well.
My cat, for example, makes it quite clear what she thinks about being
left home alone for more that say, 12 hours. I get a token bite on the
arm or leg...
That said, it is very rare for cats to attack people whilst sleeping,
although its been known to happen. Usually it appears that the cat sees
something moving, such as an adams apple and goes for it. Pretty damned
rare, though.
