German humor is massively sarcastic, darling.
Having grown up there, I've found that nothing drives the color out

Sudden, total humor failure. Heh heh. In other words, the feeling is
mutual.
Sarcastic comments take different forms, you really need to be on the
same wave length to understand anothers humour.
This could as you state be a cultural difference, due to the
environmental factors we all grow up within.
But it could also be a pre-concieved idea of the mis-understandings
between cultures that in some way blocks are ability to really except
the humour for what it is, purely a joke!!!!.
Is it not then a better idea to learn how to explain in a way that
suits everyone, then this would be true communication, and not a
back-lash of environmental factors from the past that turn us into
closed minded puppets. To truely live we need to learn, empathy,
understanding and be ready to open our clouded minds to all opinions.
And if ya really lucky you might find somebody who can do the same.
By the way this is an individual opinion and if I knew the real way to
work it, I would of bottled world peace and I would not be sat here.
