Actually, they do not cause depression.
In fact, they were used to combat refractory depression in many 
countries up until the mid 1950s and it has recently been "discovered" 
that they may be useful for this purpose.  Oxymorphone, pantopon, 
omnopon & laudanum may be the best for this purpose.
