Basically when lancing an abscess (and I have done hundreds) you cut
very shallowly and repeat (in the same groove) until pus comes out.
Then you put away the knife.
Your handedness is a bit of a problem though. You could get a 20cc rig
and an 18 or 16G drip needle. Anaesthetise as you see fit or not at
all, then plunge the needle in with reverse suction on the syringe.
Repeat in a couple of spots on the abscess (new needle each time). If
no pus comes out AT ALL, then you either have inspissated pus or what
you thought was an abscess is an area of indurated tissue - the body is
healing itself.
If you got pus out, take the needle off the syringe, put the part where
the needle goes on (sorry, tem****ary aphasia - someone help me with the
correct name please) into one of the holes and flush with saline.
Hope this helps. If not, ask!
