View GalleryA crack cocaine addict carried out a burglary at his own
grandmother's home to raise money for drugs, a court has heard.
Gary Stock's grandmother immediately suspected him of being the
burglar and contacted police, Preston Crown Court was told.
Prosecutor Paul Brookwell said: "She had locked her premises on Fir
Trees Avenue, in Ribbleton, and set the alarm. When she returned and
realised there had been a burglary, she suspected the defendant."
A DVD player and hi-fi system were stolen.
Police went to Stock's then home on Poplar Grove, Ribbleton, and found
some of the stolen items, Mr Brookwell said.
Two days later, while on bail, Stock broke into a house three doors
away from where he was living on Poplar Grove, again stealing
electrical items, the court heard.
Stock, 24, of Alder Road, Ribbleton, pleaded guilty to the burglary at
his grandmother's and asked the court to take into consideration the
second burglary at his neighbour's home.
The judge was told he had two previous offences of burglary on his
record.
On Stock's behalf, Paul Humphries, said that at the time he had a drug
problem and all his offending was related to that. He had made
strenuous efforts to rid himself of the addiction and had now remained
drug free for four months.
Judge Andrew Gilbart QC sentenced Stock to eight months in prison but
suspended the term for two years.
As part of the suspended sentence order he must attend a substance
related offending programme.
